Ghana's Digital Address System: The GhanaPostGPS Code (Not ZIP)

Ghana does not use traditional ZIP/postal codes. Instead, it has a national digital addressing system: GhanaPostGPS.

The Code Format: GG-RR-SSSS

• GG = GH (ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 for Ghana).
• RR = 2-digit Region Code (e.g., 01 Greater Accra, 02 Ashanti, 03 Western, … 16 North East).
• SSSS = 4-digit Settlement/Unique Code within that region (derived from 2010 Census enumeration areas).

Example

GH-01-1234 → Ghana, Greater Accra Region, specific locality/block.

How to Get a Code

1. Download GhanaPostGPS App (iOS/Android) or visit ghanapostgps.com.
2. Allow GPS location — generates code for your exact spot (5m x 5m grid).
3. Or search by landmark/address.

Benefits

• Precise delivery (mail, parcels, ambulance, fire, ride-hail).
• Financial inclusion (KYC for banks, mobile money).
• Emergency response, urban planning, revenue collection.
• Works offline (app caches grid).

Legacy "Postal Codes"

Some forms (especially international) still ask for "postal code." Common workarounds:

• 00233 (Ghana's country calling code) — widely used as dummy.
• GA-123-4567 (old Accra format) — obsolete but sometimes accepted.
• Leave blank / write "GhanaPostGPS: GH-XX-XXXX" — best practice.
