Does Africa Have Continental-Scale Mountain Ranges? Yes.

The premise is wrong. Africa does have continental-scale mountain ranges—several, in fact. They're just not a single continuous chain like the Andes or Rockies.

Major African Mountain Systems

1. Atlas Mountains (Northwest)

Length: ~2,500 km (1,600 mi) across Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia
Highest: Toubkal (4,167 m / 13,671 ft) — Morocco
Sub-ranges: High Atlas, Middle Atlas, Anti-Atlas, Tell Atlas, Saharan Atlas
Significance: Climate barrier (Mediterranean vs. Sahara); water tower for North Africa

2. Ethiopian Highlands (Northeast)

Extent: ~1,000 × 500 km — "Roof of Africa"
Elevation: Vast plateau >1,500 m; peaks to 4,550 m (Ras Dashen)
Significance: Source of Blue Nile; unique Afroalpine ecology; cradle of Ethiopian civilization

3. East African Rift Volcanoes

Kilimanjaro (5,895 m) — Africa's highest, free-standing
Mount Kenya (5,199 m) — glaciated equatorial peaks
Rwenzori Mountains (5,109 m) — "Mountains of the Moon," permanent glaciers
Virunga Volcanoes — active (Nyiragongo, Nyamuragira)

4. Drakensberg / Maloti (Southeast)

Length: ~1,000 km (South Africa/Lesotho border)
Highest: Thabana Ntlenyana (3,482 m)
Significance: Great Escarpment edge; San rock art; water source for SA

Why No Single "Andes"?

Africa's geology is dominated by ancient cratons (stable continental cores) and rift tectonics (East African Rift pulling apart), not the sustained subduction that builds continuous cordilleras. The mountains are discrete blocks, not a chain.
