Ghana's Electricity: Powered by the Volta River, Not an African Lake

No large African lake supplies electricity to Ghana. Instead, Ghana's hydroelectric power comes primarily from the Volta River system.

Key Hydroelectric Installations

  • Akosombo Dam (1965) – Creates Lake Volta, the world's largest artificial lake by surface area (8,502 km²). Generates 1,020 MW.
  • Kpong Dam (1982) – Downstream, 160 MW.
  • Bui Dam (2013) – On the Black Volta, 400 MW.

These dams provide the majority of Ghana's electricity, supplemented by thermal plants (natural gas, light crude) and growing solar capacity. Lake Volta is a reservoir, not a natural lake, and lies entirely within Ghana—not shared internationally like Lake Victoria or Lake Tanganyika.

Ghana also exports power to neighbors (Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso) via the West African Power Pool.
