Ancient Ghana vs. Modern Ghana: Different Locations

The ancient Ghana Empire (c. 300–1200 CE) was located in the Sahel region of West Africa, covering parts of present-day southeastern Mauritania and western Mali. It was inhabited by the Soninke people.

Modern Ghana lies farther south on the Gulf of Guinea, bordered by Burkina Faso, Togo, and Ivory Coast. Its population includes Akan, Ga-Dangme, Ewe, and other groups.

Though they share a name—chosen in 1957 to honor the empire's legacy—they are geographically distinct.
