Who colonized Rwanda first?

The first colonial power to occupy Rwanda was Germany, which began its colonization efforts in 1894. Rwanda became part of German East Africa until the end of World War I in 1918. After World War I, Rwanda became a Belgian colony, and remained so until it gained its independence in 1962.
