Algeria's Education System: Structure, Progress, and Challenges
Structure
- Primary (Enseignement Primaire): 9 years (ages 6–15), compulsory, free. Two cycles: 5 + 4 years. Arabic, French, math, science, history, geography, civics.
- Secondary (Enseignement Secondaire): 3 years (ages 15–18), free, not compulsory. Two streams:
- General: Academic (sciences, letters, tech) → Baccalauréat → university.
- Technical/Vocational: 4 years → professional qualification.
- Higher Education: Universities (Algiers, Oran, Constantine, Tlemcen, etc.), grandes écoles, institutes. Not free (low fees); admission via Baccalauréat.
Persistent Challenges
- Underfunding: Overcrowded classes, outdated labs, teacher shortages.
- High Dropout: Especially post-primary; poverty, child labor, early marriage (rural girls).
- Literacy Gap: ~81% adult literacy (2021); lower for women, rural areas.
- Quality & Relevance: Rote learning, weak critical thinking, graduate–job mismatch.
Progress
Recent reforms: curriculum modernization, digital school platforms, expanded vocational tracks, teacher training investment. Enrollment rates have risen sharply since 2000.
