South Africa's Five Main Land Regions

South Africa's geography is classically divided into five major physiographic regions, each with distinct climate, ecology, and economic role:

  1. The Highveld (High Plateau)
    • Vast interior plateau (1,200–1,800 m / 3,900–5,900 ft).
    • Grassland savanna; summer rainfall, dry sunny winters.
    • Heartland: Johannesburg, Pretoria (Gauteng), Bloemfontein, Welkom.
    • Gold, coal, maize, industry, finance.
  2. The Lowveld (Lowland Bushveld)
    • Eastern flank, descending to 200–600 m toward Indian Ocean / Limpopo Valley.
    • Subtropical; savanna, thornveld, malaria zone (historically).
    • Cities: Nelspruit (Mbombela), Polokwane, Phalaborwa.
    • Gateway to Kruger National Park; citrus, sugar, subtropical fruit.
  3. The Karoo (Semi-Desert)
    • Western/Central interior (west of Highveld escarpment).
    • Great Karoo (north) & Little Karoo (south, between mountains).
    • Arid, succulent & dwarf shrubland; <200 mm rain. Extreme temps.
    • Sheep (Merino/Karoo), goat farming; Square Kilometre Array (SKA) radio astronomy; fossils; solar/wind potential.
    • Towns: Beaufort West, Graaff-Reinet, Calvinia, Oudtshoorn (Little Karoo).
  4. The Drakensberg Mountains (uKhahlamba)
    • Eastern escarpment, border with Lesotho. Basalt cliffs, sandstone foothills.
    • Highest: Thabana Ntlenyana (3,482 m / 11,423 ft) in Lesotho; SA side peaks ~3,300 m.
    • UNESCO World Heritage Site (uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park) – rock art (San), biodiversity, water catchment.
    • Source of Orange (Gariep) River – SA's longest.
    • Tourism: hiking, climbing, San art sites, skiing (Tiffindell).
  5. The Bushveld (Savanna / Lowveld Transition)
    • Northern region (Limpopo, North West, Mpumalanga lowveld).
    • Mixed acacia/thornveld, mopane woodland, grassland.
    • Rich mineral belt: Platinum Group Metals (Rustenburg), chrome, vanadium, diamonds (Venetia).
    • Prime wildlife: Kruger National Park, Waterberg, Madikwe, Pilanesberg – Big 5, photo safari industry.
    • Cattle, game ranching, citrus, cotton.

Cross-Cutting Features

  • Great Escarpment – Rim separating Highveld from coastal lowlands (Drakensberg = eastern segment).
  • Cape Fold Mountains (SW) – Separate region (Cape Floristic Kingdom).
  • Coastal Belt – Narrow, varied (Mediterranean SW, subtropical SE, desert NW).

These five regions—Highveld, Lowveld, Karoo, Drakensberg, Bushveld—frame South Africa's agriculture, mining, biodiversity, water, and human settlement.
