These refineries have a combined installed capacity of over 1 million barrels per day, but they often operate below their full capacity due to various operational challenges, including:
- Lack of regular maintenance and overhauling of the plants
- Crude oil supply disruptions
- Technical malfunctions
- Inadequate power supply
- Lack of investment in upgrading the refineries' technologies
Due to these challenges, Nigeria has been relying heavily on imported petroleum products, which puts a strain on the country's economy and foreign exchange reserves. To address this issue, the government has been considering various options, including rehabilitating existing refineries, building new ones, and attracting private investment in the petroleum sector.
