Why was Ethiopia able to succesfully resist European rule?

Ethiopia's resistance to colonization came from a variety of factors:

* Ethiopia was a centralized, Christian state with a long history of independence and strong national identity. The Ethiopian Empire had existed for over 1,000 years by the time European powers began to arrive in Africa in the 19th century. This gave Ethiopia a sense of unity and cohesion that helped it resist foreign incursion.

* Ethiopia's geography was also a factor in its resistance. The country is mountainous and difficult to access, which made it difficult for European powers to establish a permanent presence.

* European powers were also competing with each other for control of Africa, which weakened their ability to focus on Ethiopia. Britain, France, Italy, and Germany all had designs on Ethiopia, but they were unable to agree on how to divide the country. This allowed Ethiopia to play one power off against the other and maintain its independence.

* Ethiopia's military was also a factor in its resistance to colonialism. The Ethiopian army was well-trained and equipped, and it was able to defeat several European expeditions. The most famous of these victories was the Battle of Adwa in 1896, in which the Ethiopian army defeated an Italian force. The Battle of Adwa is often seen as a turning point in African history, as it showed that African nations were capable of defeating European powers.

It is important to note that Ethiopia was not completely immune to European influence. The country did adopt some European customs and institutions, such as the use of firearms and the development of a modern bureaucracy. However, Ethiopia was able to maintain its independence and its own unique culture and identity.
