Historical background of volleyball in Ethiopia?
The sport of volleyball was first introduced to Ethiopia in the early 1900s by missionaries and educators from Europe and the United States. The first volleyball teams were formed in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, and the game quickly gained popularity among the local population. In 1930, the Ethiopian Volleyball Federation (EVF) was established, and the sport began to spread throughout the country. In the following decades, volleyball became one of the most popular sports in Ethiopia, with teams being formed in schools, universities, and sports clubs. The EVF organized regular competitions, including national championships and international tournaments, and Ethiopian volleyball teams began to compete in international competitions. In 1978, Ethiopia hosted the African Volleyball Championship for the first time, and the Ethiopian men's team finished in third place. In the following years, Ethiopian volleyball teams continued to participate in international competitions, and the sport continued to grow in popularity in the country. In recent years, the EVF has focused on developing volleyball at the grassroots level and promoting the sport among women and girls. The EVF has also worked to improve the quality of coaching and officiating, and to establish a sustainable development plan for volleyball in Ethiopia.
