How are ergs related to African deserts?

The erg is a term generally reserved for large areas of sand (sand seas) in the North African deserts, notably in the Sahara, as well as in the Arabian Peninsula with deserts there such as the famous 'Empty Quarter' also termed 'Rub' al Khali'. An erg usually denotes an area where sand covers approximately 20% of the ground or more.
