Endangered Animals of Africa

The continent of Africa offers one of the most diverse populations of animals. However, there are some challenges with maintaining Africa's animal population without many of them becoming endangered species. Challenges include poaching, animal trade and disease. If the plight of the animals of Africa are not addressed in a systematic way, the number of endangered species will continue to grow.
  1. Cheetah

    • The scientific name for Cheetah is Acinonyx jubatus.

      According to Arkives, the African cheetah is the fastest land mammal in the world. Cheetahs make their habitation in the Sub-Saharan African regions. The cheetah can reach up to 87 km per hour, which makes it easy to catch its prey.

      The African cheetah is an endangered species because of the lost of habitat, hunting and killings by natives and competition with other carnivores.

    Spotted Hyena

    • The scientific name for the Spotted Hyena is Crocuta crocuta.

      According to Arkive, the spotted hyena is the second-largest carnivore in Africa after the lion. The hyena makes is dwelling in the Sub-Saharan regions of Africa. It is a good hunter and scavenger. The hyena travels in clans and hunt in groups. They communicate with each other with their whoops and yells.

      The spotted hyena is an endangered species due to habitat loss, killings by farmers and entrapment.

    Mandrill

    • The scientific name for the Mandrill is Manrillus sphinx.

      According to Arkive, the mandrill is the largest monkey in the world. It is found in Cameroon, Guinea and South Western Congo. Its habitat include mountainous terrain and sub-tropical biomes. The mandrill lives in groups of 40. They create a strict hierarchy among the groups. The mandrill feeds on fruit, seeds and small animals.

      The mandrill is an endangered species because of hunting, human settlements and the expansion of the agricultural industry.
