The History of Gymnastics in Ethopia

The history of gymnastics in Ethiopia can be traced back to the 1930s when the first gym was built in Addis Ababa by the Italian occupation. Italian gymnastics instructors were brought to the country to teach the local population about gymnastics. The first gymnastics club, called the Y.M.C.A. Gymnastics Club, was founded in 1935.

After World War II, Ethiopia became an independent country and gymnastics began to develop rapidly. In 1948, the Ethiopian Gymnastics Federation was founded and the country began to participate in international competitions. The federation was one of the founding members of the African Gymnastics Union and the International Gymnastics Federation.

Ethiopia's first major success in gymnastics came in 1956 when Abebe Bikila won the gold medal in the marathon at the 1956 Summer Olympics. He went on to win another gold medal in the marathon at the 1960 Summer Olympics. Bikila's success inspired many Ethiopians to take up gymnastics.

In 1968, Ethiopia hosted the African Gymnastics Championships for the first time. The country has since hosted the championships several times and has won numerous medals.

Gymnastics is still a popular sport in Ethiopia and is taught in schools and universities throughout the country. The country has produced several world-class gymnasts, including Derartu Tulu, who won gold medals in the 10,000 meters at the 1992 and 2000 Summer Olympics.

Ethiopia is a rising star in gymnastics and is expected to continue to produce world-class athletes in the coming years.
