Dining in the Kingdom: Respect & Ritual

Seating & Arrival

• Gender-segregated seating common (separate rooms/areas).
• Wait for host to seat you. Host sits at head.
• Greet elders first. Handshakes (men); verbal/nod (women, unless they offer hand).

Meal Conduct

• Meal often begins with Bismillah (prayer).
• Eat with right hand only (left considered unclean). If utensils provided, use them Continental style.
• Communal platters: take from portion in front of you.
• Finish what you take; leaving food may imply dissatisfaction.
• Pass dishes with right hand.

Conversation

• Engage politely. Avoid politics, religion (unless host initiates), sensitive topics.
• Wait for host to start eating.
• Compliment the food/hospitality.

Hospitality & Gratitude

• Accepting tea/coffee/dates is polite (refusal can offend).
• Thank host before and after (Shukran, JazakAllah khair).
• Host insists on paying; polite token protest accepted, then gracious acceptance.
