Bengal: A Region, Not a Country – Divided Between India & Bangladesh

Bengal is not a sovereign country. It is a historical, cultural, and linguistic region in the eastern Indian subcontinent, defined by the Bengali language and the Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta (world's largest).

The Partition (1947 & 1971)

• 1947 (Partition of India): British Bengal split along religious lines:
  • West Bengal → India (Hindu-majority). Capital: Kolkata.
  • East Bengal → Pakistan (Muslim-majority), renamed East Pakistan.
• 1971 (Bangladesh Liberation War): East Pakistan secedes after genocide/war → People's Republic of Bangladesh (Bengali-speaking, Muslim-majority). Capital: Dhaka.
