Unzen's volcanic landscape inspires rich folklore:

1. The Fire Demon (Enma-Daiō)

A fearsome demon resides in the crater, controlling eruptions. Depicted as a giant with red skin and horns; its anger causes explosions.

2. The Nine-Tailed Fox

A beautiful fox spirit seduced local men, causing neglect of duties. Hunted down to protect the community.

3. The Hidden Hot Springs

Hunters found a wounded deer healing in a steaming pool; the water cured them too, revealing the area's therapeutic springs.

4. Unzen Shrine

Founded ~1,500 years ago by Buddhist monk Gyōki on Mount Unzen to worship mountain gods and pray for locals. Now a major pilgrimage site.
