Distance from Abu Dhabi to Salalah, Oman: Flight, Road, and Strategic Context

Crossing the Arabian Peninsula's Southern Flank

The straight-line (great-circle) distance between Abu Dhabi (UAE) and Salalah (Oman) is approximately 225 miles (362 km). However, the practical travel distance varies dramatically by mode.

✈️ By Air: Fastest & Most Common

  • Flight time: 1 hr 15 min – 1 hr 30 min.
  • Airlines: Oman Air (daily), Etihad (seasonal), SalamAir (LCC).
  • Airports: AUH (Abu Dhabi Intl) → SLL (Salalah Intl).
  • Note: No land border crossing needed; both international airports.

🚗 By Road: The Long Way Around (1,000+ km)

No direct road connects the two through the Empty Quarter (Rub' al Khali). Must travel:

  1. Abu Dhabi → Al Ain (160 km, 1.5 hr)
  2. Al Ain → Al Buraimi (border, 20 km)
  3. Al Buraimi → Ibri → Haima → Thumrait → Salalah (~850 km, 9–10 hrs on NH-31/NH-47)

Total: ~1,030 km, 11–12 hours driving. Requires Oman visa (if not GCC national), vehicle insurance, fuel planning (long stretches >200 km without services). Spectacular desert/mountain scenery (Jebel Samhan, wadis).

🚌 By Bus

  • Mwasalat (Oman National Transport) + Al Khanjari/Al Ghazal (UAE-Oman): Abu Dhabi → Al Ain → Salalah. ~14 hrs, ~$50–$80. Daily.

Strategic Context

Salalah is Oman's southern gateway—monsoon (Khareef) turns it green Jun–Sep, attracting 500k+ Gulf tourists. Abu Dhabi–Salalah air corridor is a key intra-GCC leisure route. The Rub' al Khali barrier makes overland travel an expedition, not a commute.
