In terms of size, Tajikistan is a relatively small country, bordered by Afghanistan to the south, China to the east, Kyrgyzstan to the north, and Uzbekistan to the west. Tajikistan's total land area is approximately 143,100 square kilometers (55,200 square miles), making it slightly smaller than the state of Wisconsin in the United States.
The shape of Tajikistan is roughly rectangular, with a narrow strip of land extending to the west. The country's northern and eastern borders are defined by the Tien Shan and Pamir mountain ranges, respectively. The southern border is formed by the Amu Darya river, while the western border is shared with Uzbekistan.
