In what ways did emperor Shotoku use china as a model for Japan?

Political model

Emperor Shotoku created the Twelve-Level Cap and Rank system, based on the bureaucratic system. This new system aimed to bring order and stability to the kingdom. As a result, individuals were classified into twelve ranks, each with a particular set of responsibilities.

Buddhism

In 584, Buddhism was made the country’s official state religion. This decision reflected China's impact on Japan. The religion became central to Japanese culture, particularly in the political, social, and spiritual spheres.

Cultural and Educational Practices

Emperor Shotoku was also very keen on education and learning, and he established many schools and colleges throughout the country. Many scholars from China came to teach in these institutions. As a result, Japanese students were exposed to Chinese ideas and practices in literature, art, music, and other areas of knowledge.

Centralized Government

Emperor Shotoku established his court in Asuka, where he also constructed a grand palace complex. He concentrated all power in Asuka, which he ruled with the help of his aristocratic ministers and advisors. This approach to governance mirrored China's centralized system.

Architecture and City planning

Japanese art and architecture began incorporating Chinese design elements. This influence is evident in the Shitennoji Temple, built in 593, resembling traditional Chinese temples. He even adopted Chinese-style city planning by designing the capital city based on the Chinese Tang Dynasty's capital, Chang'an.

Legal System

The country’s legal structure was also modeled after China’s. The Seventeen-Article Constitution is just one example of the nation's adoption of Chinese legal practices.

Economy and Trade

Under Emperor Shotoku, Japan saw extensive economic growth due to the flourishing of international trade. The country experienced a rise in trade with China and other parts of Asia. This interaction not only brought financial prosperity but also introduced a variety of goods, technology, and ideas.
