The world's longest human-built structure, the Great Wall of China, is a series of brick and stone fortifications that was originally built over 2000 years ago. Tourists from all over the world flock to China to take a glimpse of and climb the historic Wall.

    • The Great Wall of China stretches over 4000 miles from Shanhaiguan in the east of China to Lop Nur in the west.

    Significance

    • The Great Wall of China served the purpose of protecting the Chinese Empire from attacks and invasions from the north during the early dynasties of China.

    Size

    • The Great Wall of China is 25 feet tall in places, and its width ranges between 15 and 30 feet.

    History

    • Construction began on the Great Wall of China during the Qin Dynasty, around 208 BC. In later years, Chinese dynasties repaired, rebuilt and expanded many sections of the Wall.

    Misconceptions

    • The Great Wall of China is considered one of the Seven Medieval Wonders of the World. It is not part of the Seven Wonders of the World which were named by the ancient Greeks.
