Saxaul trees are important to human and animal survival in the Gobi Desert because they provide water. The tree has a natural water reserve behind its bark, which Gobi Desert natives can harvest. A parasitic plant forms on the roots of the Saxaul tree, and these plants can be harvested and used for medicinal purposes.
In more hospitable regions of the Gobi Desert, convolvuluses---also known as morning glory bushes---are able to thrive, adding some color to the desert landscape.
Athough the region of desert near Mongolia does not receive much rain, plants such as onions still are able to grow. These wild onions are described as having a hazelnut flavor.
Tamarix plants also are hardy enough to survive the barren Gobi Desert. Tamarix is the name for a family of shrubs averaging 8 to 16 feet tall.
Saltwort is named for its strong tolerance to salt. This small, weedy plant is able to survive the region of the Gobi Desert known as the Salt Desert, which has the least amount of vegetation.
