Know that Male (pronounced Maaa-lay) is the capital of Maldives and is a small but highly populated city that encompasses nearly all of its own island.
Spend some dough. Maldives is a popular tourist destination and its economy is dependent on the tourist trade.
Get wet. You'll be surrounded by the ocean at all times with chances for swimming, sunbathing, boating and scuba diving.
Dress for warm weather. Expect temperatures in the 80s (F) during your stay.
Don't hire a translator. English is commonly spoken.
Convert your money to the official Maldivian Rufiya. Credit cards are also widely accepted in resorts.
Travel by air. The only way to arrive in Male is by air. International flights land at the Male International Airport on Hullhule Island. From there, sea planes ferry visitors to the city of Male, located on a separate island.
Bring comfortable shoes. You'll find it's easiest to travel around the small city by foot.
Don't wander. Exploring the outer islands without a registered guide or permit is illegal.

Expect quality service at hotels. You'll find a range of nice accommodations all over Male, nearly all of which are accustomed to catering to travelers.
Live in luxury. Male is a very expensive city and accommodations are no exception.
Get airborne. Consider exploring Maldives by seaplanes and helicopters operated by Maldivian Air Taxi or air tours offered by Air Maldives.
Be respectful. Male is a populated city and holds to traditional Islamic values.
Live it up at your resort, not in public. Outside of your resort dress must be conservative, alcohol is not to be consumed, and strict adherence to Islamic practices and law is vital.
Travel to nearby Kudahuvadhoo island to visit the mysterious hawittas, which are believed to be the remnants of ancient buddhist temples.
