Sri Lanka, Colombo Hotels

Google.com lists over 500 hotels near Colombo, the former capital of Sri Lanka (a country formerly known as Ceylon). In 1978, administrative functions were moved to the present capital of Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, but Colombo remains the commercial capital. Sri Lanka’s reliable hotels have also remained in Colombo, and many of them are located in the city center. Many of them are also near Colombo’s top attractions, restaurants and shops.

    • Water fountains, fresh flowers and rich Indian designs decorate the lobby of the Taj Samudra, a Colombo hotel located near the business center, museums, and restaurants. Its 300 air-conditioned rooms face the pool or sea, and include suites on three business floors, luxury suites and presidential suites. All rooms have their own bathrooms, international direct dialing and satellite color TV.

      Hotel amenities include a business center with secretarial services and workstations, a beauty parlor and hair salon, laundry and dry-cleaning, a florist, bookshop, fitness center, souvenir shop and swimming pool. Hotel dining options include Sichuan and Cantonese dishes at Golden Dragon, Sri Lankan and other Asian dishes at the Ports Coffee Shop, and steaks at the Steak & Grill House. For parties and events, the hotel has six banquet rooms accommodating up to 450 people, with one of them fronting a big lawn.

    • Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo, a member of the Cinnamon Hotels and Resorts chain, overlooks Beira Lake on seven acres of land. Deluxe, premium, and executive rooms plus three types of suites add up to 340 rooms and suites on seven floors. Views are either that of Beira Lake or the city skyline.     Ceylon Continental Hotel

    • Located along the Indian Ocean, the Ceylon Continental is a five-star business hotel that opened in 1973. It is near local attractions such as the National Museum, the zoological gardens and some of the better restaurants and shops of Sri Lanka. It is also only an hour from the international airport. All rooms and suites overlook the sea, including the Presidential Suite, which features a bedroom, living room, dining area and kitchenette with a flat-screen TV, and butler service.

      The Emerald coffee shop, the Club Continental restaurant, the Tandoor Indian restaurant and Café Conti are the hotel’s dining places. Banquets and events may be held in any of three ballrooms, two meeting rooms and an indoor and outdoor banquet hall. Other hotel facilities include a gym, swimming pool, spa, boutique, squash court and tea store.
