What Percentage of Australians Are English? It's Complicated

Australia does not collect "English ethnicity" as a census category. Ancestry data (2021 Census) shows:

  • 33% English ancestry (self-reported, multiple responses allowed)
  • 29.9% Australian ancestry
  • 11% Irish, 9% Scottish, 5% Chinese, 4% Italian, etc.

"English" identity overlaps with "Australian"; many report both. The population is highly multicultural—no single ethnic label fits a majority.
