The name "Australia" first appeared on a 1625 Dutch map titled Nova Hollandia by Willem Janszoon, derived from Latin australis ("southern"). The British officially adopted the name in 1788 when the First Fleet arrived at Botany Bay.
So the name has been in use for nearly 400 years, officially for over 230.
