Why Is Most of Australia Desert? The 10-Inch Rainfall Threshold
Australia's Aridity: The 10-Inch Rule
Australia is the driest inhabited continent on Earth, and a single statistic explains much of it: 70% of the country receives less than 10 inches (250 mm) of rain per year. This threshold defines the boundary between semi-arid and arid land—effectively, desert.
The Geographic Cause: Ocean Currents & the Subtropical Ridge
Australia sits on the Indo-Australian Plate, surrounded by oceans—but the type of ocean current matters:
- Cold Currents (West & South): The West Australian Current and the southern extension of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current cool the air above them. Cool air holds less moisture, so onshore winds drop little rain.
- Subtropical High-Pressure Belt: The continent sits under the descending limb of the Hadley Cell (around 30°S). Sinking air warms, inhibits cloud formation, and creates persistent high pressure—classic desert mechanics.
- Lack of Major North-South Mountain Ranges: Unlike the Americas, Australia has no continental-scale mountains to force moist air upward (orographic lift). The Great Dividing Range runs north-south but is too low and too close to the east coast to pull moisture deep inland.
Rainfall Distribution
- Tropical North (Top End, Cape York): Monsoonal, 1,000–2,000+ mm/year—but highly seasonal (wet Nov–Apr, dry May–Oct).
- East Coast: Orographic rain from the Great Dividing Range, 800–2,000 mm.
- Southwest (Perth region): Mediterranean, 600–1,000 mm (winter rain).
- Interior (Outback): <150 mm, highly erratic.
Consequences
- Over 18% of mainland is officially desert (named deserts: Great Victoria, Great Sandy, Tanami, Simpson, Gibson, Little Sandy, Strzelecki, Sturt Stony).
- Semi-arid rangelands cover another ~50%, used for extensive grazing.
- Population hugs the coastal fringe: 85% live within 50 km of the coast.
- Water security is a national priority: Murray-Darling Basin management, desalination, groundwater monitoring.
In short: cold currents + subtropical highs + flat interior = a continent where 10 inches of rain is a luxury most of the land never sees.
