A coalition of government, academia, NGOs, and zoos leads the recovery effort:
Lead agency. Tasmanian Government (DPIPWE) initiative (est. 2003). Coordinates all conservation: captive breeding, disease monitoring, vaccine research, reintroductions, policy. tassiedevil.com.au
World-leading DFTD research (Menzies Institute, School of Natural Sciences). Genomics, immunology, ecology, epidemiology. Trains conservation scientists.
Large-scale free-range breeding sanctuary (Barrington Tops, NSW). Founded 2011 by Australian Reptile Park. Holds ~150+ devils in naturalistic conditions; key insurance population & source for releases.
Manages sanctuaries in Tasmania (e.g., Mt. Zero, Five Rivers) protecting devil habitat, controlling feral predators, monitoring populations.
Funds research, habitat protection, community engagement; advocates policy; runs "Adopt a Devil" program.
Coordinated Australasian Species Management Program (ASMP) for captive breeding (Trowunna, Devils@Cradle, Healesville, Melbourne, Taronga, Perth, Auckland, etc.).
Private land conservation; protects critical devil habitat via reserves & covenants.
These groups collaborate through the STDP and the DFTD Research & Management Advisory Committee.
