Australia's Four Antarctic Research Stations

Australia maintains four permanent research stations in the Australian Antarctic Territory (AAT) and subantarctic region:

  • Mawson Station (est. 1954) — Oldest continuously operating station south of the Antarctic Circle; coastal East Antarctica.
  • Davis Station (est. 1957) — Vestfold Hills, Ingrid Christensen Coast; major scientific hub.
  • Casey Station (est. 1969, rebuilt 1988) — Bailey Peninsula, Vincennes Bay; gateway to Law Dome and ice sheet research.
  • Macquarie Island Station (est. 1948) — Subantarctic island halfway between Australia and Antarctica; UNESCO World Heritage site; critical for biology, meteorology, and geophysics.

These stations support year-round research in climate science, glaciology, biology, geodesy, atmospheric physics, and Southern Ocean ecosystems. Summer populations reach 80–100 per station; winter crews of 15–25 maintain continuous operations. Australia claims 42% of Antarctica (AAT), though the Antarctic Treaty suspends territorial assertions.
