Driving Melbourne to Gladstone: Not Possible Directly

You cannot drive directly from Melbourne, Victoria to Gladstone, Queensland. The Great Dividing Range creates a continuous mountain barrier along Australia's east coast with no road crossing between the two cities' latitudes.

Why No Road Exists

  • Topography: Rugged alpine terrain (Snowy Mountains, Victorian Alps, NSW high country) – peaks 1,500–2,200 m.
  • Protected areas: Kosciuszko NP, Alpine NP, Snowy River NP – wilderness, no roads.
  • Climate: Winter snow, ice, avalanche risk; summer bushfire closures.
  • Engineering cost: Tunnels/viaducts prohibitive for low traffic demand.
