Clean Up Australia Day: Origins and Impact

Clean Up Australia Day: Origins and Impact

Clean Up Australia Day began in 1990 when solo yachtsman Ian Kiernan, appalled by ocean pollution during the BOC Challenge round-the-world race, organized a community clean-up of Sydney Harbour. The first event drew 40,000 volunteers.

Growth

  • 1991: Went national—300,000 participants.
  • 1993: Inspired Clean Up the World (UNEP partnership)—now engages ~35 million volunteers in 130+ countries annually.
  • Held annually on the first Sunday of March (autumn in Australia).

Impact

  • Over 20 million Australians have participated since 1990.
  • Collected 400,000+ tonnes of rubbish.
  • Shifted national conversation: litter → waste reduction → circular economy.
  • Schools, businesses, councils, and community groups register sites via cleanup.org.au.

Legacy

Ian Kiernan (1940–2018) was named Australian of the Year (1994). The day remains Australia’s largest community environmental mobilization—proof that one person’s idea can spark a global movement.
