Travel from India to Australia by Boat: No Direct Route Exists
There is no direct passenger boat or ferry service between India and Australia. The Indian Ocean crossing (~7,500 km / 4,600 mi) is served exclusively by air travel.
Current Options
- Flights: Multiple daily connections via Middle East hubs (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha), Southeast Asia (Singapore, Kuala Lumpur), or direct on Qantas (Perth–Delhi/Mumbai). Flight time: 10–14 hours depending on routing.
- Cargo/Freighter Travel: Some container lines accept a few passengers (typically 4–12) on freighters. Voyage time: 18–25 days. Requires advance booking through specialist agents (e.g., Maris Freighter Cruises, Strand Travel). Not a scheduled ferry service.
- Cruise Ships: Occasional repositioning or world cruise segments may connect the regions (e.g., Mumbai to Fremantle/Sydney), but these are rare, seasonal, and expensive.
For practical purposes, flying is the only regular, reliable option. Freighter travel is a niche adventure, not a standard transport mode.
