The settlement of Quebec City in 1600 was a small and fortified outpost surrounded by a palisade fence. It was located on a high promontory overlooking the St. Lawrence River, and consisted of a few dozen buildings, including a church, a storehouse, and a few dwellings. The population of Quebec City at the time was around 100 people, and the majority of them were French settlers.
