Canadian Travel to the UAE: Visa-Free Entry Explained

Canadian passport holders enjoy one of the world's most travel-friendly documents, and the United Arab Emirates is no exception. Since 2017, Canadians have been eligible for visa-free entry to the UAE for tourism, business, and transit—making spontaneous trips to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and beyond remarkably simple.

Current Entry Rules (2024)

  • Visa type: Visa on arrival (VOA) — free, issued at immigration.
  • Validity: 30 days from entry date.
  • Extension: One 30-day extension possible (AED 600 fee) through ICP (Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security) or typing centers.
  • Total maximum stay: 60 days per visit.
  • Multiple entry: No. Each entry generates a new 30-day stamp. Leave and re-enter for a fresh period.
  • Passport requirement: Valid for at least 6 months beyond entry date.

Eligible Purposes

  • Tourism
  • Business meetings, conferences, exhibitions (no local employment)
  • Transit (even without VOA, 48-96 hour transit visas available)
  • Visiting family/friends

Not Permitted on VOA

  • Employment (requires employer-sponsored work visa/residence permit)
  • Study (requires student visa)
  • Journalism/media work (requires press accreditation)
  • Volunteer work

Entry Process

  1. Arrive at any UAE international airport (DXB, AUH, SHJ, etc.) or land border.
  2. Proceed to immigration (e-gates available for Canadians at major airports).
  3. Present Canadian passport (biometric preferred).
  4. Receive entry stamp—no separate visa sticker or form.
  5. Customs: Declare items over AED 3,000 value, restricted goods.

Important Considerations

  • Previous visa violations: Overstays, bans, or deportation history can result in denial.
  • Dual citizenship: Enter/exit on the same passport. If you hold UAE residency, use that channel.
  • COVID-19: As of 2024, no vaccination/testing requirements, but check airline rules.
  • Land borders: Oman-UAE crossings (Al Ain, Khatmat Malaha) also issue VOA to Canadians.

Longer Stays: Visa Options

  • 5-year multi-entry tourist visa: AED 650, no sponsor, 90 days per entry, extendable.
  • Virtual Work Visa: 1 year, for remote workers earning ≥$3,500/month.
  • Golden Visa: 10-year residency for investors, professionals, talents (AED 2M+ property, etc.).
  • Job Seeker Visa: 60-120 days, no sponsor needed (new 2022).

Verification

Rules change. Always confirm via official sources before travel:

For Canadians, the UAE remains one of the most accessible Middle Eastern destinations—no advance paperwork, no fee, just land and explore.
