What creates pockets of calm water near Amchitka Island in the Aleutians?

Amchitka Island is located in the Rat Islands group of the western Aleutian Islands and consists mostly of submarine and intertidal volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks that have erupted within approximately the last few hundred thousand years. Some small, older sedimentary units are locally intercalated with them.
