The Seven Wonders of Barbados: Caves, Gardens, Plantations & Marine Parks

Barbados' "Seven Wonders" showcase the island's geological, historical, and ecological heritage — a curated list promoted by the Barbados Tourism Authority.

The Seven

1. Harrison's Cave — Crystallized limestone cavern (Boyce, St. Thomas). Tram tour through streams, waterfalls, stalactite/stalagmite forests. "Great Hall" 15m high.
2. Andromeda Botanic Gardens — 6-acre hillside garden (Bathsheba, St. Joseph). 600+ tropical species. Created by Iris Bannochie (1954). RHS partnership. Birdwatching haven.
3. St. Nicholas Abbey — 1650s Jacobean mansion (St. Peter). One of 3 genuine Jacobean houses in Western Hemisphere. Rum distillery, steam mill, great house, archive. National Trust.
4. Sunbury Plantation House — 1660s great house (St. Philip). Mahogany antiques, horse-drawn carriages, 300-year-old sugar machinery. UNESCO World Heritage tentative list (not inscribed).
5. Codrington College — 1745 Anglican theological college (St. John). Oldest degree-granting institution in English-speaking Caribbean. Allée of cabbage palms, coral stone architecture.
6. Barbados Museum & Historical Society — 1817 British military prison → museum (Garrison, St. Michael). 500k+ artifacts: Amerindian, plantation, social history, natural history. UNESCO Memory of the World registry.
7. Folkestone Marine Park — 2.2 km marine reserve (St. James). Reef snorkeling, shipwrecks (Stavronikita), turtle nesting. Glass-bottom boats. First marine park in Barbados (1981).

Animal Flower Cave (sea cave, north), Gun Hill Signal Station, George Washington House (only US president's foreign visit), Mount Gay Rum Distillery (1703), Oistins Fish Fry (Friday nights), Crane Beach, Bathsheba's soup bowls (surf).
