Hawksbill Turtles: The Regular Visitors to UAE Waters

The Hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) is the species most commonly encountered in the waters of the United Arab Emirates, particularly in the Arabian Gulf.

They forage on coral reefs and rocky substrates, feeding primarily on sponges. The UAE's warm, shallow waters provide critical habitat. Nesting occurs on offshore islands (e.g., Bu Tinah, Sir Bu Nair) and some mainland beaches. Conservation programs by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) and Emirates Wildlife Society monitor and protect nesting sites and foraging grounds.

Green turtles (Chelonia mydas) are also present but less frequently seen in coastal waters compared to Hawksbills.
