What is the relative location of Cape Verde?

The Republic of Cabo Verde, commonly known as Cape Verde, is an archipelago of ten volcanic islands in the central Atlantic Ocean. It is located about 570 kilometers (350 miles) west of the African mainland, roughly at the same latitude as The Gambia. The islands are situated between 14 and 18 degrees north latitude and 22 and 26 degrees west longitude. The archipelago was formed by volcanic activity, and its highest peak is Mount Fogo, a currently active stratovolcano that rises to 2,829 meters (9,281 feet) on the island of Fogo.

The islands of Cape Verde are divided into two main groups: the Barlavento Islands ("Windward Islands") and the Sotavento Islands ("Leeward Islands"). The Barlavento Islands include Santo Antão, São Vicente, Santa Luzia, São Nicolau, Sal and Boa Vista, while the Sotavento Islands include Maio, Santiago, Fogo and Brava.
