Panama City Population: Clarifying the "Most People" Claim

The original statement contains a logical contradiction: "Most people do not live in Panama City. The majority of the population of Panama lives in Panama City." These sentences cannot both be true.

Here's the accurate picture: Panama City (the capital district) houses roughly 1.5–1.8 million people—about 35–40% of Panama's ~4.4 million total population. The broader metropolitan area (including San Miguelito, Arraiján, La Chorrera) pushes this to ~2 million, or nearly half the country.

So: Panama City is the dominant urban center, but most Panamanians live outside the capital district proper. The interior provinces (Chiriquí, Veraguas, Coclé, Herrera, Los Santos) and indigenous comarcas (Guna Yala, Emberá-Wounaan, Ngäbe-Buglé) hold the majority.

Why the concentration? The Canal, finance, logistics, government, and the Tocumen hub create a gravitational pull. But Panama's "city primacy" is less extreme than many Latin American capitals (cf. Lima, Montevideo, Buenos Aires).
