What date did Puerto Rico come into existence?

Puerto Rico has been inhabited since at least 1000 BC by indigenous peoples, and was claimed by Spain in the late 15th century. In 1898, Puerto Rico was ceded by Spain to the United States as a result of the Spanish–American War. Puerto Rico has been a US territory ever since, with residents being US citizens since 1917.
