Who settled in Jamaica?
Jamaica was first inhabited by the indigenous Taíno people, who arrived on the island from South America around 600–800 AD. The Taínos were a peaceful, agricultural people who lived in small villages. In the late 15th century, the Spanish arrived in Jamaica and quickly conquered the Taínos. The Spanish used Jamaica as a base for their exploration of the Americas, and they also established sugar plantations on the island. The Spanish ruled Jamaica for over 300 years, until the British captured the island in 1655. The British continued to use Jamaica as a sugar plantation colony, and they also brought in slaves from Africa to work on the plantations. The British ruled Jamaica until 1962, when it gained independence.
