How did the California sea lion get its name?

Assistant

The California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) was named by the early European explorers who encountered these animals along the coast of California. The species was first described in 1792 by the Spanish naturalist Juan José Navarro, who gave it the scientific name Phoca californiana. The term "sea lion" was later applied to this species by the American naturalist John Richardson, who noted the animal's resemblance to the African lion (Panthera leo) in terms of its powerful body, large mane, and vocalizations. The specific name californianus refers to the animal's geographic distribution, which primarily encompasses the Pacific Ocean waters around the coast of California, as well as the Gulf of California.
