The first SeaWorld park was opened in San Diego, California, in 1964. Since then, SeaWorld parks have been opened in Orlando, Florida; San Antonio, Texas; and Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. SeaWorld also owns and operates Discovery Cove, a marine mammal interaction park in Orlando, Florida, and Aquatica, a water park located near each SeaWorld park.
SeaWorld parks are home to a variety of marine animals, including dolphins, whales, sea lions, seals, penguins, and otters. The parks also feature aviaries and aquariums with exotic birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish.
SeaWorld parks have been criticized by animal rights activists for the treatment of its animals, particularly its killer whales (orcas). In recent years, SeaWorld has come under increasing pressure to end its orca shows and to phase out the keeping of orcas in captivity.
Despite the controversy, SeaWorld parks continue to be popular tourist destinations. In 2018, SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment reported a total attendance of 23.8 million visitors.
