Azerbaijan: Geographic Overview and Total Area

Situated at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia, Azerbaijan occupies a strategic position in the South Caucasus region. The country spans a total area of 86,600 square kilometers (33,400 square miles).

Geographic Boundaries

Azerbaijan shares borders with five countries and one major body of water:

• East: Caspian Sea – the world's largest inland body of water
• North: Russia (Dagestan region)
• Northwest: Georgia
• West and Southwest: Armenia
• South: Iran

The country also includes the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, an exclave bordered by Armenia, Iran, and Turkey.

Landscape Diversity

Despite its modest size, Azerbaijan features remarkable geographic diversity—from the Caucasus Mountains in the north to the low-lying Kura-Aras plain in the center, and the subtropical Lankaran region in the south. This varied terrain contributes to the country's rich biodiversity and nine of the world's eleven climate zones.
