The Flag of the Dominican Republic: Description and Symbolism

The Dominican flag features a white cross dividing the field into four rectangles:

  • Top left & bottom right: Ultramarine blue — liberty
  • Top right & bottom left: Vermilion red — blood of heroes

At the center, the national coat of arms (on official/government versions) shows a Bible open to John 8:32 (“And the truth shall make you free”), a gold cross, six spears, and a ribbon with the motto “Dios, Patria, Libertad” (God, Fatherland, Liberty), flanked by laurel and palm branches.

Civil flag omits the coat of arms. Adopted November 6, 1844; modified 1908, 2010.
