Why was Central Park in New York created?

Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux's design won a design competition and they began to transform Manhattan's 778 acres for their "Greensward Plan” that would provide fresh air and recreational outlets away from industrial development and densely populated urban areas which led to a number of health problems.
