Did native Americans take over Alcatraz?

In 1969 a group of Native American activists occupied the island of Alcatraz in San Francisco Bay, California. The occupation, named the "Alcatraz Island Red Power Movement", lasted for 19 months and was organized by a coalition of Native American activists and organizations, including the American Indian Movement (AIM). The occupation's goals included protesting the federal government's treatment of Native Americans, improving conditions for Native Americans in prisons and advocating for Native American self-determination and sovereignty. The occupation ended peacefully in June 1971 when the activists voluntarily left the island.
