What is the soil in Northeast of Brazil like?

The main soil types of Northeastern Brazil are:

*Litosols* are shallow soils that develop over hard rock, particularly granite and gneiss. They are well drained and have low fertility, but can support some agriculture with the addition of fertilizers.

*Red-Yellow Latosols (Oxisols)* are deep, well-drained soils with a reddish-yellow colour. They are moderately fertile and can be used for a wide variety of crops, but require regular additions of nutrients to maintain fertility.

*Gleyed Latosols (Dark Red Latosols)* are deep, poorly-drained soils with a greyish-brown or dark red colour. They are found in low-lying areas and can be used for rice and other wetland crops.

*Podzolic Soils* are sandy, acidic soils that are found in the coastal zone. They are low in fertility and can only support limited agriculture, mostly subsistence farming.

*Massapê* is a heavy clay soil that occurs along the coast of the state of Bahia. It is poorly drained and can be difficult to cultivate, but can be used for sugar cane and other water-loving crops.

*Tabuleiro* is a type of soil found in the coastal zone and in the interior of the Northeast region. It is a sandy, well-drained soil with low fertility. It can be used for cotton, sugarcane and fruit trees.
