Capture of New Orleans: January 8, 1815 — After the War Ended
The Battle of New Orleans (often called the Capture) occurred on January 8, 1815—15 days after the Treaty of Ghent was signed (Dec 24, 1814), but before news reached Louisiana.
The Clash
- US: Maj. Gen. Andrew Jackson, ~4,500 militia, regulars, pirates, Choctaw, free men of color
- UK: Maj. Gen. Edward Pakenham, ~8,000 veterans (Peninsular War)
Result
Decisive American victory. British: ~2,000 casualties (Pakenham killed). US: ~70. Jackson became a national hero → presidency (1828).
Why It Mattered
- Boosted US morale & nationalism post-War of 1812
- Secured Mississippi River & Gulf trade
- Mythologized "frontier riflemen" vs. British regulars
- Ignored: treaty already restored status quo ante bellum
Irony: The war's most famous battle happened after peace was agreed.
