What was Incas government?

Sapa Inca

>The Sapa Inca was the absolute ruler of the Inca Empire and is considered a divine figure similar to the ancient pharaohs of Egypt. Inca society was divided into three classes, the nobility, the common people and the slaves, and the Sapa Inca was at the top of these classes.

Rulers

>Following the Sapa Inca were four appointive rulers with distinct ranks. The Apocuna held religious and political power and was the heir apparent. The second role was the Tucuy Ricuy acting as the eyes of the Sapa Inca and monitoring the empire. Third, the Capac Apo held great military power and lastly, the fourth ruler, a prince in line to the throne, was the Inca Raccay.

Nobles and State Officials

>The nobility was further separated into two groups, the Panacas, who were relatives of past rulers and the Ayllus, who consisted of nobles who were not relatives of past rulers. The Ayullus filled the roles of state offices such as military generals and administrators of the civil government.

Provinces

>The empire was divided into provinces controlled by governor provinces and district governors. Each provincial unit was subdivided into districts each with a district governor or curaca ruling. The curaca’s main duties consisted of distributing public lands and overseeing the census of individuals.

Quipucamayoc

>Also within the government system were administrative clerks called Quipucamayoc who were responsible for the intricate system of record-keeping using colored strings with knots called a quipu. Records indicate the quipus kept track of census data, religious rituals and other events.
