How did Monument Colorado get its name?
The name "Monument Colorado" is derived from the presence of numerous sandstone mesas and buttes in the area, which are considered natural monuments. Located west of the town of Montrose in western Colorado, these geologic features have distinct shapes and sizes that resemble monuments or structures. The most notable of these formations are the "Fisher Towers", a group of red rock pinnacles that rise dramatically above the surrounding landscape. The area was designated a National Monument by President William Howard Taft in 1906 and later established as Monument National Park in 1971, further solidifying the name "Monument Colorado" as the common reference for this region.
